Five days through one of South Africa's most dramatic landscapes — mountain passes, river crossings, Big 5 wildlife and unforgettable bush camp evenings.
About the Tour
The Waterberg Biosphere is one of the largest mountain ranges in South Africa and one of the least-travelled. Our 5-day guided route follows mountain passes, red dirt tracks and river crossings deep into the heart of this UNESCO-recognised region — taking in Marakele National Park, private game reserves, waterfalls and some of the best bush camping in Limpopo.
You travel in your own 4x4 and we lead the convoy. All route-finding, camp bookings and local knowledge are taken care of. The Sprinter 4x4 — our own purpose-built expedition vehicle — supports the group with supplies and recovery gear.
Day by Day
Every day has its own character — from the first dust clouds leaving Bela-Bela to the final morning pack-up heading home. Here's how the route unfolds.
Day One
We assemble in Bela-Bela and head north-west into the Waterberg. The first stretches are on tar but don't last — before long the road turns red and loose. We enter Marakele National Park and begin climbing. The viewpoint stop is mandatory: the plateau stretches to the horizon, a sea of green bush broken by ancient sandstone cliffs. First night at Marakele campsite or nearby Klipbokkie — cold drinks, fire, stars.

Days Two & Three
Two full days to explore at your own pace. Morning game drives into Marakele give the best wildlife action — elephants, white rhino, giraffe, Cape buffalo and a huge variety of antelope are regularly spotted. Lunch stop at Jes Park (a brilliant bush bar and restaurant — cold beers, a pool and a kitchen that punches well above its weight). Optional extra game drive in the afternoon. Evenings back at camp around the fire.

Day Four
The best driving day. We leave Jes Park and push deeper into the mountains, crossing the Melk Rivier (Milk River) — a highlight after summer rains when it runs fast and brown. The track to Laliele Creek Farm winds through some of the most dramatic pass scenery of the trip. Waterfalls trickle down cliff faces. Klaarskop antelope dart across the road. We settle in at Klipspringer Camp for the final night — one of the most scenic spots on the route.

Day Five
Final morning coffee at Klipspringer — one more look at the bush before we pack up and point home. The return route follows the mountain pass back through the Waterberg, offering a completely different perspective heading south. We roll back into Bela-Bela with dust on the tyres, full memory cards and very good stories. The 500km loop is complete.
